Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – Review

3001804-0839498132-28769Uncharted 4, the lastest and possibly the last journey of Nathan Drake arrived on the Playstation 4 on May 2016 and just now I got a chance to play it.

Uncharted became one of my all time favorite franchises and certainly my favorite from the last generation of videogames, so how does it fare now that it has jumped to the Playstion 4?

First, the graphics. I have to admit at first, the very first levels were nice looking but nothing I didn’t expect from Naughty Dog but once the game opened up and we actually get to the big, open, lush and colorful areas I was blown

Every area is full of detail and care. You can really tell each piece of the game was handcrafted to perfection. Every tree, leaf, statute, everything looks so good I just had to stop my way and admire it.

Not only the scenarios are gorgeous but the graphics really shine when it comes to the characters. It seems the entire game is motion captured because every cutscene is so immersive and detailed you feel as if you were right there. This level of detail from the developer Naughty Dog is what makes the difference between their games and others.

So, the graphics are amazing but what about the gameplay? I’m happy to say it’s better then ever. Nathan Drake, the main character, had received some very welcome new moves. First is the grappling hook which is introduced very early in the game. This hook is used not only on exploration but also in combat which gives it a whole new flavor. With the hook you gain an increased mobility to change your position when in a tight spot and every space to move is important since now areas ate much more vertical. Not only you move around from cover to cover horizontally but now you can climb a lot of areas.

This new ability to move up comes in handy again because another newly added ability given to Drake is the option the be stealthy. Sure we’ve had this before in other games of the franchise but this time it has been nailed to perfection. You are now able to go through entire areas undetected. It almost feels like a good stealth action game.

The soundtrack once again is top notch. It is rarely intrusive in a way that it outshines the other areas of the game but it feels so perfect and enhances every moment in the game, be it an action packed moment or a more down to earth scene, everything feels right on the spot. Talking about the sound, I can’t wrap up before giving props to the voice actors. Once again they nailed it. If this turns out to be indeed the last adventure of Nathan Drake I’ll have to admit I’ll miss these characters because not only their appereance and animations are great but their voices are fantastic. It reminds me a lot of “The Last of Us“, as every scene, be it small or grand has so much emotion put into it you can’t just help be feel invested.

Overall, I loved every moment with his game and it seats among my favorites of the Uncharted franchise together with “Uncharted 2: Among Thives”. I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone, be a fan or not of this series and if you’re a Playstation 4 owner I believe this game should not be skipped. As of right now, I think this is the best game I’ve seen on the system.

+ Big and beautiful areas to explore.
+ Acting and animations are fantastic.
+ Steady framerate throughout the entire game.
+ Satisfied ending!

– Some areas feel a bit too big (for my tastes).
